Topography around Copșa Mare (Gross Kopisch) 250 years ago
The Josephinian Land Survey mapped the Habsburg Empire. The Grand Duchy of Transylvania was mapped in the years 1769-73 for the first military survey (shown above). This was a secret military map and was drawn with the human eye. The second military survey was made 30 years later and is much more sophisticated and harder, at least for the layman on horseback, to follow because of the greater detail. This section from the first survey showing Copsa Mare (Gross Kopisch) is the one we prefer for orientation when riding out and walking. Nothing significant has altered in the landscape depicted here since then.
